I hear this all the time. Meetings, more meetings. A quick call that turns into a meeting. Emails that need to be answered. To-dos.

Most people hide behind their job. They turned the initial job description into busywork. If people are busy and doing their job, how can they get in trouble?

The misunderstanding is that people are hired to do the work. To create value, to add their uniqueness to the firm/project. Procedures, rules, laws and other cultural regulations turn work into jobs. Everybody can do your job. But you were chosen to do the work.

If you spend most of your time doing your job, you need to change the job enough to be able to create value.
